Its original beginnings are unknown. But as legend has it, the first sighting of him was back in the 1860’s on what was then the Eastern Pacific Line, now called the Heart Line Express. The story goes that a gentleman of common appearance would board this train at random and unscheduled stops. His arrival was always noticed by the other passengers, however, his departure from the train was never seen. Witnesses remember that he was always in possession of a wooden box. Although simple in its design and construction, other passengers concluded that it must be something of great importance as it never left his grasp. Perhaps it contained gold, silver or legal tender, speculators thought. In fact, we now know it contained something much more valuable than money or jewels. You see, the contents of those simple wooden boxes were in actuality expressions of love being delivered with much care to soul mates separated by circumstance and longing for their loved ones.
